The importance of research in national planning and development cannot be overemphasised.
This has prompted the Senator, representing Imo North Senatorial District, Chukwuma Frank Ibezim, to move for the establishment of a research council in Nigeria.
He insisted that a research council has the panacea for the multifarious problems the country is confronted with.
Speaking to the press in his office at the National Assembly, Ibezim explained the importance of the proposed body to the economic and social development of the country.
He said that with the establishment of a research council in the country, the problems of unemployment, social vices and other malaise bedeviling the country would be solved.
“These are perilous times for Nigeria, for the first time in our history, Nigeria is experiencing population explosion amongst our young people .The society is aggravated because there is less employment opportunities for the youths and influx of drugs in the society.
“In such a situation, we need to put on our thinking cap and this is where the National Research Council comes in.”
The lawmaker went on to explain that the National Research Council would be an umbrella body that would co-ordinate and seek for funds for research institutes and bodies.
He further added that for the sake of efficiency and effectiveness, the proposed Research Council should be domiciled in the Presidency, adding that it would insulate the council from unnecessary bureaucracy.
Ibezim also explained that he is making necessary consultation with relevant stakeholders in order to make sure that the bill on National Research Council is assented to by President Muhamadu Buhari.
