The Medical Director/CEO of Isolo General Hospital, Dr Godwin Akhabhoa has said that blood is critical to saving lives.
Dr Akhabhoa said this while addressing a group of voluntary blood donors who showed up at the hospital to donate blood. The hospital marked the world blood donor day toady.
The Medical Director said that blood is a major requirements for the survival of patients, especially in emergency situations. He noted with displeasure that some patients die because of lack of blood.
Dr Akhabhoa observed that because of the importance of blood, the World Health Organisation set aside a day to celebrate, sensitize and raise consciousness on the need for blood donation.
He said that blood donation is a win-win for all as the recipient is saved and the donor gets fresh blood as replacement.
He appealed to the donors to become among the pool of regular donors to ensure the hospital has steady supply of blood.
Also speaking, Assistant Director, Laboratory Services, Mrs Omolara Eniayewum noted that blood is life, but has no substitute. She appealed to the people to donate for the sustainability of the blood bank in Lagos state.
The Consultant Haematologist, Dr Chris Onalu told the donors that every pint of blood given to patients saves lives. He encouraged them to become voluntary donors.
Mr Tajudeen Olatunji from the Lagos State Health Commission said that another benefit of blood donation is the unfettered access the voluntary blood donor card gives to any donor to any Lagos state hospital to prevent a relation who received blood from its replacement.
Some of the blood donors said they were happy to donated to save lives. The Internal Auditor of the hospital, Oluseye Sogunro has so far donated 20 times.
A total of 39 people donated blood during the programme.
