Comrade Ayodele Adewale APC State Organising Secretary Lagos State Chapter, Deputy National Coordinator of Grassroots Movement for Asiwaju Tinubu and Shettima (G-MATS), Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Special Duties 2 Directorate was the keynote speaker at the National Parliamentary Summit 6.0 organised by the LASUSU parliament at the Students’ Arcade in the Ojo campus.
The ex-Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) President focused his speech on the need for students to submit themselves to quality mentorship to achieve greatness and good development to fulfill their life ambitions.
These qualities had helped define his personal and professional life as a former Executive Chairman Amuwo Odofin Local Government, former President of Lagos State University a position he won in his 200 Level, former Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), former Mobilisation and Laison Officer to late Chief Anthony Enahoro (CFR) led Pro-National Conference Organization (PRONACO), former Secretary of the Citizens Forum led by Prof. Wole Soyinka and former Secretary of June 12 Coalition and Stakeholders under late Dr. Beko Ransom-Kuti.
Comrade Ayodele, charged all participants to look for good mentors to achieve their positive goals in life.
He said: “Mentorship is very important, if you want to develop, get a good mentor, you cannot develop without having good mentors, these are the people that will help you in the attainment of your goal in life.”
He emphasised that the civic responsibility of a student is to make sure that he/she is law-abiding, studious and inculcates good learning character to become better person in society.
He further advised them to strive hard to achieve success, become problem solvers, job creators and not liability to society at large.
The 32nd LASUSU Speaker Hon. Opemipo affirmed that the essence of the Summit was to attract individuals from the public service and other organizations connected to their vision to discuss trending issues and to further have a robust relationship and connection with these well-established individuals “…This is the legacy we have laid and we have continued to follow and it is never-ending.” she said.
The highlight of the Summit was the presentation of Awards of Excellence to Comrade Ayodele Adewale for his outstanding contributions to student development and being a good ambassador of the Lagos State University especially in his civil society engagements and public service as Executive Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government (see link to some of his activities in his first term in office https://youtu.be/FktGi0Ewrcw) and other personalities within and outside the University.
An award of honour was also presented to Dr. Ibrahim Fatoyinbo (Lecturer, Department of Mass Communication, Lagos State University of Science and Technology), Hon. Edidi Babatunde, Hon. Ibrahim Oladimeji, (Former Chairman of Lagos State Speakers’ Forum Youth/Policy Development Strategy), Mrs. Damilola James (Youth Advocate and Social Policy Practitioner) and the APC Youth Leader, Lagos State, Dr. Muritala Seriki.
The Acting Coordinator, of the Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations (CIPPR), Mr. Olaniyi Jeariogbe was equally honoured for his mentorship as he bagged the Meritorious Award Of Service and appreciation for his selfless service.
The National Parliamentary Summit 6.0 was also graced by the Director, Lagos State University Directorate of Advancement (LASUDA), Prof. ‘Yinka Okubena – Dipeolu, Deputy Registrar/Head, LASU Counseling Unit, Dr. Ayeni, past Speakers and Leaders of students of the University and students from various departments, faculties and schools.
Comrade Adewale also used the occasion to institute an award of academic excellence to be known as Comrade Ayodele Adewale Award for academic excellence. This award shall only be given to Students Union elected leaders who graduate as overall best student in their higher institution or with first class. The objective of the award is to bridge the huge gap with qualitative leaders in contemporary Nigerian politics and society by bringing the best of students in academics, morals and character into unionism, activism and students politics thereby preparing them with the right mindset and leadership skills for accountability, management and responsibility that is required to improve the Nigerian social, economic and political space.
The honours award of N500,000 yearly shall be given to the overall best student at the Lagos State University while best student in the department of Chemistry at the Lagos State University shall receive a cash gift of N300,000. Also every overall best student from the University of Lagos, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State University of Technology, Lagos State University of Education, Federal School of Marine Technology Oceanography Lagos State and Michael Otedola College of Education Epe shall receive a yearly cash gift of N300,000.
Comrade Adewale promised to make it a yearly event as long as he lives and his children will continue with it after he has passed GOD willing.
He gave historical insights of how foremost leaders in Nigeria had started from the Students and Youth movement. He quoted Pa Imodu, the first Nigerian Labour leader who stated that the two institutions that incubate good leadership for society are Youth Movement and Student’s Movement.
Comrade Ayodele said Engr. Olayinka Herbert Samuel Heelas Badmus Macaulay created the first political party in Nigeria started as a Youth leader before Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo who also started as a students leader later created the second political party that led to the beginning of competitiveness (opposition) in politics of Nigeria.
He said Marcus Garvey mentored Dr. Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe who later became the first President of Nigeria. Sir Ahmadu Bello was discovered as a Youth leader and he in turn discovered Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Alhaji Sheu Shagari as a Youth leaders while Aminu Kano discovered and mentored Alhaji Salihu Tanko Yakasai and many others.
Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro (CFR) was one of Nigeria’s foremost anti-colonialist, pro-democracy activists and politician. Chief Enahoro started his activism from Kings College Lagos as a year 2 student when he led the black students to refuse the poor food given to them by the whites as against the canned food given to the white students which he saw as misnomer and discriminatory because he believed they were all equal and he later rose to become a legislature and moved the motion for Nigeria’s independence after several attempts before him.
Alhaji Maitama Sule was discovered as a Youth leader so also was Ambrose Folorunsho Alli of the Midwestern region, Senator Joseph Sarwuan Tarka of the middle belt, Michael Okpara Eastern region et al.
He said it’s important for students to know the political history of their father land and country as this will help them to plan for their future.
Comrade Ayodele Adewale implored the students to vote wisely and vote rightly for APC. He said they should mobilize massively to vote for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to become the President Federal Republic of Nigeria and Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu as executive Governor of Lagos State.
Comrade Ayodele Adewale said Asiwaju has promised not to let the country down especially the Students and Youths. He touched on other key issues that Asiwaju’s administration would resolve which includes insecurity, unemployment, provision of 24hrs of sustainable electricity that will boost productivity and drive industrialization, provision of good health infrastructure and systems, obedience to rule of law, improved agriculture backed with modern technological equipments, creation of science and technological hubs across the country, development of the natural potentials in each state, build infrastructures across the nation, support for small businesses and opening the nation’s economy to foreign direct investments.
He said Asiwaju also promised to involve traditional institutions more in government structures at all levels.
He noted that Asiwaju’s administration will focus more on developing education and creating support systems for students. He talked about developing green and renewable energy and technologies plus improving the tourism industry in Nigeria. His administration will work with the creative industry to boost it’s potential. He said he’ll support full autonomy for local government and that there will be inclusion of women, people with disabilities and youths in his government and many more.
It was an enlightening and thought-provoking program with the students going away with a renewed hope, zeal while he implore them to focus on their role and future so that they will create impact in society.
