In a major breakthrough, police have arrested and arraigned members of a syndicate who drugged and robbed a Lagos-based journalist, Mr. Abayomi Ajiboye, on August 22.
Ajiboye, a journalist with Newsbustang. com, an online TV platform, was attacked by a three-man gang while commuting from Oshodi to Isheri-Oshun in the Ijegun area of Lagos. The gang members, who have been identified as Ronald Eyam, 29; Uche Mathew, 30; and one John, were arraigned at the Customary Court Ejigbo on Monday on two counts of felony and theft.
During the hearing, the judge remanded the suspects in prison and adjourned the case until October 23 for further proceedings.
In a harrowing account of his ordeal, Ajiboye explained that he was offered a sachet of water by one of the gang members, which he accepted, believing it was an act of kindness. However, he lost consciousness shortly after drinking it and was robbed of his phone and other valuables.
The police were quick to respond to the incident, with Inspector Ozabor Friday and his team launching an investigation in the Alaba Rago and Ojo areas. The suspects were apprehended at their residence in a nearby ghetto, along with the receiver of Ajiboye’s Samsung Note10+ phone.
During interrogation, the suspects revealed that they mixed illicit drugs, including Lexotan, to incapacitate their victims based on their operating locations.
The police have recovered Ajiboye’s phone and initiated further prosecution regarding the 250,000 Naira that went missing from his pocket during the incident.
This breakthrough is a testament to the professionalism and dedication of the Lagos State Police Command, led by the newly elevated Commissioner of Police, Fayoade Adegoke.
