The Labour Party flag bearer in the November gubernatorial election in Imo State, Sen. Athan Nneji Achonu, SANA, has picked a former member of the House of Representative, Hon. Tony Nwulu, as his running mate.

Achonu stated during the unveiling of Nwulu in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Friday, June 2, that the party needed strong, trusted and credible figures to win the election.

Responding, Nwulu, an advocate of “Not-too-Young-to Run’, said: “I am glad I have been chosen to serve Imo State under the Labour Party. Senator Athan Achonu is a well-known figure in Nigeria and needs no introduction. I chose to work with him because he never fails in anything he ventures in life.”

The former lawmaker added: “Our mandate now is to relieve our people from protracted suffering and cries. We have come to rescue Imo from the stronghold of a group that wishes Ndi-Imo dead.

“The current administration has not shown concern for the plights of Imo citizens; no investment, no empowerment, no good life. The only sector that is powering now is insecurity brought by the administration to destroy Imo State.”

Nwulu bemoaned the deplorable state of things in the state, adding that he and Achonu are on a rescue mission.

“The Imo we used to know before is a sad story. We have come to rescue Imo from their hands. Labour will rescue the land, including other parties and APC because it has not been easy with them.”
Nwulu had represented Oshodi/Isolo, Lagos Federal Constituency in the National Assembly and became popular for sponsoring the Not-Too-Young-To-Run bill, which was passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also once contested the Imo State governorship election in 2018 on the platform of the United Progressives Party, UPP.

Reacting, Ambassador Theo Chibueze, the Convener of Concerned Imo Influencers, Achonu’s foremost support group, described Nwulu’s choice as a perfect pick.

He congratulated Achonu for his wise choice and expressed optimism that Labour Party would take over Douglas House in November.
