Imo gubber: Again, Labour Party reaffirms faith in Sen Achonu

Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, has reiterated the party’s endorsement of Senator Athan Nneji Achonu, as its gubernatorial candidate in the Imo State election slated for November this year.
Abure pledged his full support to ensure that Imo LP emerges victorious in the election.
Abure made the pledge when Senator Achonu paid a courtesy visit to the LP Secretariat in Abuja, alongside the Director General of his campaign organisation, Chief Chime Nzeribe and others to notify the LP National Chairman, Abure and other party executives of his campaign programmes and other preparations ahead of the election.
Speaking on the occasion, Abure said: “The national executives are strongly behind you. We will make an effort to support and attend your rallies and other engagements as the campaign kicks off in earnest.
“The Labour Party has come a long way. With the massive support the party faithful and indeed “Obidients” exhibited across the country during the last February and March elections, we are confident that the same will be replicated in Imo State election and other States too.”
Senator Achonu in his response thanked the party chairman for their support and assured the body of his preparedness for the election.
“Despite the distractions going on in Imo State, Imo LP is solidly on ground. Imo State is a hot bed of insecurity as I speak now, but that would be a thing of the past when I take over the administration in the state,” Achonu said.
“The people are in pain, and would not wait a bit to see the situation stopped. I will make sure that their votes count and will be protected during the election.”
Those that accompanied Achonu on the visit included Senator Oseloka Obaze, AIG Charles Agumuo (rtd.), Imo Labour Party Chairman; Barr, Callistus Ihejirika, among others.
Recall that a group led by Lamidi Apapa whom the party described as former members have been claiming that a Bayelsa court had ordered the replacement of Achonu with Joseph Ikechukwu Ukaegbu.
The Bayelsa court judgment was again later presented as an Imo court judgment.
However, the Labour Party has described the claims as “mischievous misinformation”, as no court, whether in Bayelsa or Imo, gave such an order.
Moreover, the party argued, Achonu was never a part of the suit, and was neither joined nor mentioned in the judicial proceedings and pronouncement.
With the open endorsement of Achonu by the Labour Party hierarchy, the coast is now clear on who is the party’s candidate in the fast approaching election.
