Ghanaian Professor, Ato Essuman Emerges WAEC New Chairman

Ghanaian professor, Ato Essuman has been elected as the new chairman of The West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The election took place during the 69th meeting of Council held virtually from March 22-26.

A statement by the Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, Mr. Abiodun Adukoju, noted that Essuman takes over from Mr. Baboucarr Bouy from the Gambia for three years

The top three performers out of 2,122,844 in the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) West African region were also honoured.

The trio, all from Ghana, included- Master Cecil Tetteh Kumah (first); Master Godfred Aseda Obeng (second); and Miss Afua Manukure Ansah.

The West African Examinations Council is an examination board established by law to determine the examinations required in the public interest in the English-speaking West African countries.

WAEC also conducts the examinations and award certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities internationally.

Established in 1952, the council has contributed to education in Anglophonic countries of West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia).

They also formed an endowment fund, to contribute to the education in West Africa, through lectures, and aid to those who cannot afford education.
