over 300 mothers of preterm babies joined their counterparts all over the world to celebrate this year’s edition of World Prematurity Day as they praised the Medical Doctors and Nurses of the Isolo General Hospital for quality care and encouragement.
A cross section of the mothers who spoke during the programme thanked the medical team for their encouragement and support while their babies were in the incubators.
One of them, Mrs Grace Ajibade said that she had a triplet with the weights of 1.5, 1.8 and 1.9 respectively . According to her, she cried when she saw them but the nurses kept encouraging and reassuring her that the babies would be okay. Mrs Ajibade said that after 13 days the babies were discharged. As at last time she checked, the weights of the babies were between 7.2 – 7.9.
Another mother, Mrs Nwosu Amaka said that she couldn’t look at her baby because it was very tiny. She said that she stayed almost two months in the hospital. According to her, the the encouragement she got from the nurses gave her strength. Her baby, which is seven months old now weights 7,2 kg
Speaking at the event, the Head of Paediatrics, Dr. Mrs Funmi Showunmi admitted that it is very stressful to take care of preterm babies, but expressed joy that the babies were all successfully treated and discharged.
Mrs Showunmi who was represented by Dr Renner Ayodele, told mothers that their role in taking care of preterms is very crucial. She advised that all members of the family including fathers should support and assist the mothers in taking care of them.
She also spoke on the theme of this year which is Zero Separation, Act Now, advising mothers to be very close to their preterm babies.
The celebration featured drama presentation, a practical session on how to take care of preterm babies which was anchored by Assistant Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs Arubayi Olaide.
The Director Service Charter, Dr Mrs Tolulope Olatunji handled the interactive session with mothers.
Fidson Health Care plc presented gifts to the babies, while the Planning Committee members are: Dr Mrs Showunmi Funmi, Dr Renner Ayodele, Dr Olugbade Funke, Dr Kareem Saidat, Dr Amoo Kanyinosola, Dr Bamidupe Oluwatobi, CNO Bolaji Basirat, ACNO Arubayi Olaide and Alabi Damola.
