Igbo Community Hosts First Ofala and Cultural Festival in Oriade LCDA

The Igbo community in Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State recently held its inaugural Ofala and Cultural Festival, celebrating Nigeria’s rich diversity and fostering unity among its ethnic groups. The event, themed “Living Harmoniously with Our Host Community for Economic Development,” attracted participants from various communities, including Igbos, Hausas, Yorubas, Efiks, and Ibibios, who came together to showcase their cultural heritage and promote peaceful coexistence.
In an interview, HRH Alhaji Suleiman (JP), the Emir/Seriki Hausa of Kuje Amuwo Odofin, described the event as a significant step toward bridging cultural and ethnic divides. He praised the festival for its role in fostering understanding and collaboration between communities. “The success of Nigeria lies in understanding and love,” he said. “When leaders come together, the people follow. Events like this remind us of the importance of focusing on our similarities and embracing one another to build a better nation.”
The Seriki Hausa highlighted his participation in previous cultural festivals hosted by the Igbo community, describing them as opportunities to strengthen bonds and share cultural values. “I have attended similar festivals, such as the Ofala celebration last year, and each time we come together, it reaffirms that there is no difference between us,” he remarked. He emphasized that mutual respect and unity are essential for Nigeria’s progress, urging all Nigerians to embrace these values.
The Eze Ndigbo of Oriade LCDA, Ezechukwuakalikamadu Emmanuel, underscored the importance of the festival as a platform for cultural appreciation and reconciliation. In his address, he urged participants to set aside differences rooted in religion, ethnicity, or politics and focus on shared humanity. “Let us bury our grudges and forge ahead with love and understanding as the driving forces for progress. There is one God who binds us all, regardless of tribe or religion,” he stated.
Chief Chinedu Okafo, Chairman of the Event Planning Committee, commended the collaborative efforts that made the festival a success. He praised the unity between the Eze Ndigbo of Oriade and the Eze Chiedumoduzie of Riverine, noting that their shared vision demonstrated the importance of celebrating culture together. “This event is a testament to what we can achieve when we unite. Our cultural displays have brought all ethnic groups together, showcasing our strength in diversity,” he said.
Abdulrasaq Akorede, Secretary of Oriade LCDA, represented the local government and assured attendees of the council’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents. He lauded the peaceful coexistence of ethnic groups in the LCDA and pledged continued support for initiatives that promote unity and economic growth.
The festival featured vibrant displays of traditional dances, music, and attire, celebrating Nigeria’s cultural richness and diversity. Participants emphasized the need to focus on shared values and harmonious relationships for the collective benefit of all communities.
